On May 16, researchers released details of vulnerabilities with the potential to leak the plaintext of emails encrypted using OpenPGP and S/MIME. While the vulnerabilities, dubbed EFAIL, could have serious consequences for those who depend on OpenPGP or S/MIME for email encryption, they are primarily symptoms of badly architected software and poorly designed standards.
